The New Year brings out the joy of being a youth in Bernese Oberland, the youth mark the day by parading through the streets of the town wearing well curved masks. The parade is filled with noise from the bands and drum corps.

The masks depict mountain spirits; the parade borrows most of its features from pre-Christian pagan customs. The costumes are colorful and the spirits bear evergreen branches.

The parade begins on the market square; adding more fun to it, there is an awards ceremony where the best costumes get awards. The party doesn’t stop, it continues until the wee hours, there are various activities around the town square and Swiss traditional music.
